COVID kicked in and like so many other organizations, Associated Students Inc. Cal Poly Pomona (ASICPP) had to react quickly. It wasn’t long before ASICPP was back on the offensive and began restructuring. One of the first acts was to remind its employees that they were valued. One way this was done was through the illustration and production of high-quality washable face masks.
ASICPP Face Masks | Art Direction, Illustration
I received the direction to use the recently released new logo and to “do something cool with it.” You can see more on this new logo here. I went with succulents for a few reasons. The first reason is that I just enjoy illustrating plant life. Another reason was that succulents are a go-to activity at almost all of ASICPP’s outdoor events. The last reason, and perhaps most importantly to me was that the succulent represents endurance. They can survive in harsh conditions with very little sustenance. I felt this was very appropriate given the circumstances and knowing that it might be some time before we would all be back together again as an organization.
I was able to convince my superiors of the value of printing two versions of the design. While the full colored version was certainly an eye-catching and uplifting design, I knew that many people would prefer to have something less flashy and more low-key. The “black on black” was printed along with the full-color version.
A small group of ASICPP professional staff got together and in one day cranked out 500+ individually packaged masks for each employee.
